Cody Cutthroat Trout Collaborative Continues

by Jackson Hole. Media

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Cody Cutthroat Trout Collaborative continues with a second round of meetings scheduled in early March.

The Cody Cutthroat Trout Collaborative is a collaborative partnership between the public and Game and Fish that will chart the path forward for Yellowstone cutthroat trout restoration in the Big Horn Basin.   Game and Fish and interested members of the public will work together to develop a set of specific recommendations for future cutthroat trout restoration efforts in the Absaroka, Beartooth, and Bighorn Mountains.

Game and Fish launched the effort in late January by convening meetings in Cody, Lovell and Worland.  During the initial meetings, participants discussed the social and biological challenges that need to be considered when thinking about the future of Yellowstone cutthroat trout.

Fisheries Supervisor Sam Hochhalter said these meetings were well attended and that the breadth of input received was impressive.  “The second series of meetings will focus on the science and biology behind cutthroat trout conservation.  Many of these topics were identified by participants at the first set of meetings as information they needed to make informed recommendations,” Hochhalter said. “At the next meetings, maps will be used to explore and identify areas where potential restoration projects could occur based on the social interests and biological parameters that need to be considered.”

“This is where the real work begins,” Hochhalter said.  “We are asking people to roll up their sleeves and work with us.  With your help, Game and Fish will be able to better balance the interests and needs of the public with Game and Fish’s obligation to secure cutthroat trout for present and future generations.”

Meetings will be held:

March 5 Lovell Lovell Community Center 5-9 p.m.
March 6 Cody Park Co Library, Grizzly room 5:30-7:30 p.m.
March 7 Worland Washakie Co Fairgrounds, Emergency management room 5-9 p.m.

A third and final meeting is scheduled in Cody March 28 due to the larger number of participants attending.
