Education Media Teleconference Wednesday

by Jackson Hole. Media

The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) will host a media call-in at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 26 to discuss the spring 2018 statewide testing results. Scores from the Wyoming Test of Proficiency and Progress (WY-TOPP) are scheduled for public release the same day. Superintendent Jillian Balow and other WDE representatives will be available to discuss the results and answer questions.

A new assessment system was implemented in the 2017-18 school year, with students in grades 3-10 taking the WY-TOPP summative assessments for math and English language arts through an adaptive online platform. Grade 4, 8, and 10 students were assessed in science through a fixed-form online assessment. Students in grades 3, 5, 7, and 9 were also assessed in writing. More information on WY-TOPP is available here.

For the first year of any new assessment, results are released later due to the calibration work that must take place in order to determine the cut scores for students. In June and July, several teacher panels convened to determine the Performance Level Descriptors and to do Standard Setting, defining proficiency levels and setting corresponding cut scores. In future years, summative results will be available earlier in the summer.

It is important to note that the 2018 WY-TOPP results represent a new baseline for statewide assessment results. Proficiency rates from WY-TOPP will not be comparable to proficiency rates from the Proficiency Assessment for Wyoming Students (PAWS).
