Jackson Hole Firefighters have been receiving numerous calls to natural gas leaks adjacent residences, three on Sunday alone. Fire Chief Matt Redwine says especially with the increase of snow sliding off of roofs, snow and ice has been hitting the gas meters outside of homes and breaking either the meters or the connections. Redwine says not only should residents regularly check on the condition of their gas meters, they should also consider protective measures to shield them from falling ice and heavy snow. The best method he says is to have a metal box built to go over the meter. He says with the weight of what is falling, a plywood box probably would not withstand the blow. Redwine emphasizes the importance of protecting and checking the gas connection to the home since a build-up under a home could result in severe consequences.
