As spring arrives in Jackson Hole, shed antlers from mule deer, elk, and moose are beginning to appear and antler collectors are anxious to get their hands on them. Although shed hunting is prohibited inside National Parks, it is a popular pastime in other areas. It’s tempting to head out in search of sheds right now — a move that could be deadly for wildlife. Consequently, the forest reminds all recreationists that antlers are not available for gathering on this side of the Continental Divide until May 1st each year. Specifically, one of the most popular paths to favorite antler collection areas on the forest is through the National Elk Refuge where gates remain closed until midnight, May first.
