During their Regular Meeting on May 8th, the Teton County School District school board voted to reconfigure Alta Elementary School from its current kindergarten through 6th grade configuration to a kindergarten through 5th grade elementary school beginning with the upcoming 2019-2020 school year.
The vote was taken after much public comment and board discussion. The recommendation to reconfigure the school was based on enrollment trends and equity between TCSD elementary schools, with an emphasis on providing all 6th grade students common curriculum, activities and programming opportunities.
The week prior to the vote, members of the board, along with Superintendent Gillian Chapman visited Alta Elementary to discuss the issue with families, get input and answer questions. Many Alta parents spoke out in opposition to the move.
