WYDOT Improves Animal Safety On I-80

by Jackson Hole Radio News

Even as the Wyoming Game and Fish Department in cooperation with Wyoming Department of Transportation work to make highway 89 south of Jackson wildlife friendly, Game and Fish is repairing and installing fencing along Interstate 80 near Leroy (east of Evanston) and are monitoring that area to protect motorists and migrating wildlife. This winter was exceptionally cold, with heavy snowfall, forcing many animals onto the interstate. Mountain View Game Warden Allen Deru says, with the high number of mule deer on the interstate this winter and significant public concern, Game and Fish personnel have been working to survey damages to the fence and has been working with WYDOT to aid them with repairs of the fence. Deru says while the fence is in need of some work, it can be repaired to a state that will continue to keep wildlife off the roadway. He says the effort has been a great coordinated effort between agencies and should reduce future roadkills.”
