School Bill Allots Money

Gingery

The Wyoming House of Representatives are considering a bill that would restructure the way school districts receive funding derived from property taxes within their own counties. Under the current system, Representative Keith Gingery explains that the money received is placed into one general fund and then re-distributed based upon the number of students in that district. Gingery points out that this is one of the most important bills that will directly affect Teton County this year. Gingery was successful on amending the bill to benefit the Dubois School District as well, which is also part of his district. The Gingery amendment expanded the small school district definition from 147 students to 243 students, which will provide extra funds to Dubois Schools. Major discussions have centered around transportation issues. Transportation costs are reimbursed at 100% to school districts. Gingery says another bill is still pending which would increase the money available to Teton County for its English Language Learners program.

300 Bison Detained

StephensCreek

A group of about 300 bison was hazed into the Stephens Creek bison capture facility on Monday after they wandered nearly 10 miles during the night onto private and public land north of Corwin Springs on Saturday and Sunday. Last week, 88 bison had been released from the facility and moved south into the park. Stephens Creek which is located inside the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park, northwest of Gardiner, Montana, is operated under the Interagency Bison Management Plan. Under that plan, bison can be captured at the capture facility when hazing bison back into the park becomes unsafe or ineffective. Captured bison will be tested for exposure to brucellosis and seropositive bison will be shipped to slaughter with meat from bison to be distributed to tribal groups and regional food banks. Seronegative bison will be held in the facility for spring release back into the park.
