Pine Restoration Project

usfs

The Buffalo Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest is seeking public input on a proposal to help restore whitebark pine in the South Fork Spread Creek drainage. Whitebark pine populations throughout the western United States have seen a dramatic decline in recent years due to mountain pine beetle.   The project, in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Research Station in Missoula, Montana, would remove trees that are competing with whitebark pines, and create openings where new whitebark pine seedlings can become established. Thinning would be used to cut out small lodgepole pines in 35 year old clearcuts in order to release existing naturally-seeded whitebark pine, promote tree species diversity, and increase stand resistance to future mountain pine beetle outbreaks.  Comments on the proposed project will be accepted until February 17th and may be directed to Karl Buermeyer at the Blackrock Ranger Station in Moran, Wyoming.

Roadkill Up

roadkill

If you have done much driving around Jackson Hole in the past month, no doubt you have seen more than one road-killed deer, elk or moose along the roadside.  Wyoming Game and Fish Spokesman Mark Gocke doesn’t have the statistical evidence, but from observations over the past several years, Gocke says he thinks the number of animals killed on the highway is higher than usual. Gocke says motorists need to be careful wherever they drive in the valley, but there are some areas that there always seems to be more activity than others. Gocke says it is important right now that drivers take it slow, pay attention and expect to see animals – especially at night or early morning.

The Big Sled Dog Race

IPSSSDRStart

Take the past 15 years of the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Races and put them together and it still won’t hold a candle to what is to be witnessed for number 16 this year.  That’s how Race Organizer Frank Teasley describes the race starting from the Jackson Town Square Friday Night. Teasley points out that the race has never before had competitors include the top racer in long-distance, the top racer in mid-distance, and the top racer in spring all in the same field. So, could we say this has become the second biggest race after the famed Iditarod in Alaska?  Teasley says the IPSSSDR may be pushing for the top spot among sled dog racers.  Teasley says those who have seen the starts over the past 15 years have never seen a show like what is planned for Friday’s start of the race.
