The Jackson Hole High School Speech and Debate Team won its fourth invitational tournament in five starts at the “Worlando Beach” Invitational, held at Worland over the weekend.  Jackson bested 3A state champion Powell for the second week in a row at a meet attended by twelve Wyoming schools. The team is hosting its own invitational tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 11 and 12, 2011 at Jackson Hole High School. The public is invited to watch events during the tournament.  Events include Lincoln Douglas, Public Forum and Cross Examination Debate, Student Congress, Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Humor, Drama, Poetry and Duet.

Grizzly Overcrowding

The crowding of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem could spell problems in the years ahead.  That’s according to discussions during last week’s winter meeting of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee.  Spokesman Gregg Losinski says as the bears range further to seek food, there is a higher likelihood they will get into trouble, and then the options for dealing with them will be greatly diminished.  Losinski says the public needs to take more ownership of the situation and be willing to make decisions that are appropriate for living and recreating in bear country.  That includes being smart about behavior in the woods or even hanging bird feeders in their yards. Losinski says as bear habitats fill, the bears that would be relocated will instead have to be destroyed since state legislation and wildlife commission rules in some of the states prohibit relocating them to other ecosystems that aren’t as crowded.

Hunter Safety Bill Passes to House

The bill sponsored by Teton County Senator Leland Christiansen adding firearm safety into the curriculum of Wyoming schools has passed the Senate now by a wide margin and has been sent over to the House for consideration.  Senate File 71 would have schools offer the course either as an elective or extra-curricular activity for students in grades five or six.    Christiansen says the measure would give children a chance to learn hunter safety before or after school, depending on what school officials decide. Not surprisingly, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department supports the bill as does the Wyoming Department of Education. The bill passed by a margin of 21 to 9.

Commissioner To Be Selected Thursday

The Teton County Commission Thursday will choose from three individuals for consideration by the Teton County Commission to fill the seat on the commission left vacant when Leland Christensen became a state senator.  Meeting last Thursday, 33 members of the the Republican Central Committee selected Chris Tice, Kelly Lockhart and Paul Perry as the final candidates for that post from a field of 16 applicants. Republican Chairperson Lisa DaCosta said the applicants were all remarkably qualified, displayed extensive public service experience and strong Republican values. Consequently, DaCosta says, the choice of finalists was difficult. County Commission Chairman Ben Ellis says the three will be interviewed by the remaining commissioners Thursday, and he is hopeful that a decision for the appointment can be made at that time.
