Gunman Sought
The search continues for an alleged gunman who shot and injured a young Jackson man yesterday afternoon near his home in the Cottonwood Park Subdivision. Police are now identifying the victim as 19-year-old Chancy Shaffer. Police Chief Todd Smith says the shooting was reported shortly before 1:30 pm as the father of the victim was driving him to the hospital for treatment. Smith says police responded to both the hospital and the residence – checking the residence for any other possible victims and determining where the shooting took place. Due to the proximity of the incident to the schools, Smith said it was determined the schools should be locked down as a precaution. When the shooter was not located and the area was determined to be clear, the students were released from lockdown. Today Smith says police are trying to determine the identity of the attacker through leads generated by the investigation and tips the police have received from the public. The attacker was described as being fairly young and wearing blue jeans, a black hoodie, and a bandana over his face. Smith says at this point, investigations lead police to believe the shooting was not random.
