Avalanche Claims Snowmobiler’s Life (Update)

A snowmobiler from Osage, Iowa died in an avalanche Tuesday near Togwotee Mountain Lodge at about 3:00 pm while three companions escaped injury.  Teton County Undersheriff Bob Gilliam says 26 year-old Tyler Tourtlett had gotten his snow machine stuck about 1½ miles east of the lodge and a companion was circling around to assist him when the avalanche to released. Jackson Hole Road Closures

Winter conditions have forced the Wyoming Department of Transportation to close two main roads out of Jackson Hole this afternoon.  Shortly after 2:00 pm, Sunday, WYDOT announced it had closed Hoback Canyon between Bondurant and Hoback Junction due to winter driving conditions, and then at 5:30 pm, Teton Pass was closed due to driving conditions and poor visibility.  Both roads were reopened by about 7:30 pm.  Bridger-Teton National Forest also announced that several popular roads had become all but impassible and the Granite Creek road had been hit by a slide measuring an estimated 15 feet deep rendering it impassible shortly before 5:00 pm.
