Wyo Sees A Bumper Crop Of Huckleberries
There are huckleberry candies, huckleberry ice cream, huckleberry shakes, and just plain fresh huckleberries – all considered a real treat in this part of the country. Even bears have a special fondness for huckleberries. Herbalist Darcy Williamson says this year has produced the most berries she has seen in 25 years. She also says she suspects there will be some pretty fat bears this year. But the berry-mania has led to the Forest Service to issue an advisory after receiving reports about people cutting huckleberry bushes to make it easier to pluck the fruit. Cutting the bushes ruins future fruit, and plants die if cut to the ground. The action is illegal and could bring a five-thousand dollar fine.
