610 and Family Returns North

610 & Family

It appears for now, Grizzly 610 and her three cubs have taken the cue and returned to Grand Teton National Park permanently – more or less.  The grizzly family had made its way down the Moose Wilson Road in search of ripe hawthorn berries, and late last week they wandered a little too far south.  That, says Grand Teton National Park’s Senior Wildlife Biologist Steve Cain, is when park and state biologists intervened.  Cain says the bears have been habituated to daily lives that are in close proximity to people present more of a challenge when they leave the park and arrive at private property. As such, Cain says, biologists convinced the bears to return to the park with the help of so-called “cracker shells” to haze them along.  Cain says they moved back into the Moose-Wilson corridor through the weekend, but now they seem to have moved on again.  In the last 24 hours he says, the bears appear to have moved from the southwestern portion of the park to the southeast part of the park – possibly near Shadow Mountain – but they have not yet been able to confirm that. Cain says with their disappearance from the area of the road, the Moose-Wilson road has been reopened to vehicle traffic for now.  Cain says an apparent scarcity of traditional food sources is leading biologists to strongly suspect that these bears were in search of food leading to their movement out of the park.

  • A hunt with no disasters isn’t as much fun - October 24, 2014
Not long ago, I saw a message on one of the hunting blogs I like to read. The writer wanted hunters to send in accounts of disasters they’d had in the field. I bet he got swamped with emails. Every hunter I know has had at least one calamity in the woods. If you hunt, […]
  • Windy At Times Today, Unseasonably Mild Through Saturday - October 23, 2014
As high pressure strengthens, warmer air from southwestern portions of the nation will move into the region today.  Conditions will also stay mainly dry throughout much of the state, but winds will be strong and gusty.  Parts of I-25 (Colorado state line to Casper) and I-80 (Cheyenne to Rawlins) could see gusting as high as […]
  • My new used truck may be the death of me - October 23, 2014
Not long ago, I brought home a 1994 Ford F-250. It’s not much to look at, but it’s even worse to drive. About the only things it has going for it are that it’s mechanically sound, and it’s technically a vehicle. I’ve named it Clunk, for good reason. When you shift it into either drive […]
  • Quiet, Seasonal Weather Expected Today - October 22, 2014
High pressure will build over the state of Wyoming today, which will keep skies sunny to mostly sunny and conditions mainly dry.  Winds, however, could be strong and gusty today, especially throughout central and southeastern portions of the state.  Parts of I-80 (Cheyenne to Rawlins) and I-25 (Colorado state line to Casper) could see winds […]
