Bison May Not Ship

Stephens Creek

Now that the court has cleared the way for brucellosis-infected bison at the Stephens Creek Corrals on the north end of Yellowstone National Park to be shipped to slaughter, they won’t be able to be transported through Montana.  Governor Brian Schweitzer issued an executive order effective for the next 90 days declaring a prohibition on the importation of bison into the state outside the designated surveillance area.  Schweitzer explains the order is in response to concerns for the transmission of the disease during their shipping.  Scheitzer says the fact that after all these years the federal government hasn’t come to terms with the problem is very frustrating.  Schweitzer says at the end of 90 days, the winter season will be over and the animals will move back into the park.  He says he is optimistic that by next season, the agencies involved will come up with a solution so the problem doesn’t have to be addressed again.
