Hoback Buck

Big game hunters and wildlife watchers can now see two big-game trophy mounts that hold impressive records at the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum. The Shiras or “Wyoming Moose” on display still holds the world record, and the American elk is the Wyoming record and ranks No. 3 in the world. Both are on display in the current museum exhibition entitled Playing Hard: Labor and Leisure in Jackson Hole. The museum collection also includes a third mount, the Hoback Buck, which holds the No. 3 Boone and Crockett World Record Mule Deer designation as well as the Wyoming state record. The animal was taken by an unknown hunter for meat in the 1920s from the Hoback Canyon. Earlier this summer, the Hoback Buck was “discovered” by Roger Selner, official measurer for the Boone and Crockett Club, as well as show manager for the Eastmans’ Trophy Deer Tour earlier this summer.  In exchange for remounting the Hoback Buck for the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum, Selner negotiated a loan of the Hoback Buck for the remainder of the Eastmans’ 2012 Deer Tour, and also for the 2013 Deer Tour which begins in early January.  It will return to the museum again in May, 2013.
