Some changes are under way at the Teton County Sheriff’s Department in efforts to make the operations of the department more effective. Teton County Sheriff Jim Whalen explains that the system being replaced placed too many responsibilities on the department’s captains. Whalen explains that as many as four or five different departments were under the control of the two captains which is a lot of responsibility. He said he wanted to spread out that responsibility some. The system Whalen is returning to utilizes an Undersheriff to take over some of the administrative duties of the two Lieutenants and level out the responsibilities. As far as those seeking service from the Sheriff’s Department are concerned, Whalen says the changes will not be all that visible. The new undersheriff will be Robert Gilliam who is currently a Lieutenant with Jackson Police Department and will move to the county for the position. The two Lieutenants will be supervised by Gilliam. Whalen says the change is purely organizational. Under Gilliam, Lieutenant Slade Ross will oversee operational services replacing Tripp Wilson who is retiring, and Lieutenant Alyssa Watkins will oversee support services. Whalen says the undersheriff system has not been in use in the Teton County Sheriff’s office for 13 years. The restructuring of the department is slated to take place October 8th.
