Game and Fish Warns About Sick Elk
Game and Fish officials have learned that a cow elk in the southern part of the state has died of lichen poisoning. That has prompted state game officials to caution hunters not to shoot an elk that appears weak or paralyzed. Lichen poisoning causes elk to become paralyzed and they typically die of starvation or predation. Officials do not know what in the lichen causes the paralysis or whether it can cause health effects for those who eat the elk affected by the lichen.
