Fire Damages Store In GTNP
An early morning fire Tuesday damaged the convenience store at Signal Mountain, but a call from an observant maintenance worker at the nearby lodge prevented it from becoming more advanced. Park Spokesperson Jackie Skaggs says the employee saw smoke coming from the building about 8:00 am, called the fire in and then entered the building with a fire extinguisher and effectively bought some time for fire apparatus to arrive. Skaggs says units from both the Park and from Jackson Hole Fire /EMS responded to the fire and using thermal imaging equipment, located the source of the fire and extinguished it. She says while the building was not gutted, the interior suffered considerable damage from smoke and fire and will need extensive repair before next season. Skaggs says the store was closed for the season, and just what caused the fire to break out is not immediately known.
