Local Schools React To Connecticut Tragedy

TC school district

Friday’s tragedy in Newtown Connecticut has not left parents and educators in Teton County, Wyoming untouched – and School Superintendent Pam Shea says the district stands ready to help individuals to cope with the emotions that have surfaced in the wake of the incident.  She says part of the objective is to maintain a normal atmosphere at the schools keeping the discussions about what happened between child and parent at home.  At the same time, faculty and counselors are watching for any signs of anxiety, which Shea says is dependent upon the development of the student – with the younger students more likely to be affected by the event.  Shea points out that while the school district has long had security protocols, monthly drills, a crisis response team, and check-in procedures to make local schools as secure as they can be against such a tragedy, some tweaking is taking place this week to address weaker points in school security.  She says a couple schools have had easier access with the front doors being left unlocked, but that has been changed and access at those and the other schools being very active monitored.  She says the situation in Connecticut is “heart-wrenching” and the educational community feels deeply for those in that community that were touched by it.  At the same time, she says the community here is urged to contact the schools or the community counseling center if they see any signs of someone experiencing emotional distress or otherwise exhibiting peculiar behaviors.

I recently saw an advertisement for a product that’s sure to be a big hit with outdoorsmen. Especially those of us who stomp around in the woods when the temperatures climb into the nineties. Last weekend, I found myself sitting in jeans, boots, a long-sleeved shirt and a cowboy hat at Cheyenne Frontier Days. While […]
