Bitter Cold Bad For Pets

Jackson Hole has experienced significantly sub-zero temperatures over the past couple days.  While that has been unpleasant for area residents, it is much more of a concern for our domestic animals.  Teton County Emergency Management Coordinator Rich Ochs says it is advisable to give special consideration to pets.  Ochs says while they can withstand a lot more than we can due to their fur coats, there is a temperature where no matter how much fur you’ve got it is a dangerous situation.  Consequently, he says, you have to be really mindful of those issues. Ochs reminds those driving area roads in this weather – particularly if they are commuting to Alpine or Teton Valley – they should have their cars provisioned with emergency supplies in case they become stranded.  However, Ochs says, don’t forget whatever pets may be traveling with you.  He says be sure you have water and provisions for them as well – including jackets for dogs and possibly mittens for their feet in the event they will have to walk a ways in the cold and snow. Ochs also suggests having arrangements with a neighbor in the event a pet needs to be looked after or taken in during the cold snap.  Ranchers too, he says need to give their livestock special consideration in the cold with a water supply that is not frozen and possible some additional shelter.
