National Ski Racers Gather At Targhee
The Grand Targhee USSMA Ski Mountaineering Classic was held on, January 6, 2013. This year’s race was qualifier for the US National Team for the February World Championships in France, with the top three competitors from the pro division earning a spot. This year’s event drew 55 competitors from all over North America and British Columbia. Top finishers included John Gaston of Aspen, Colorado; Thomas Goth of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Marshall Thompson of Crested Butte, Colorado. This year’s Grand Targhee Mountaineering Classic took athletes straight up Sweetwater and Sitting Bull to the top of Fred’s Mountain. Racers then descended through Happy Hunting Grounds and transitions for a climb up Mary’s and over to Peaked Mountain. With a boot pack climb and another transition down Peaked, mountaineers climbed 5,000 vertical feet throughout the day to finish at Targhee Plaza.
