The Jackson/Teton County Parks & Recreation Department will host a second public open house to solicit public input on potential planning and uses for BLM parcels 9 and 10 on the Snake River (map included at the end of this document). The open house will take place on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Old Wilson Schoolhouse.
The first public open house was held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, and involved conversation and brainstorming between Parks & Recreation staff and members of the public and stakeholders. Feedback and comments were collected, and this information has helped to narrow down general priorities and concepts for the parcels, should they be formally transferred to Teton County.
“At the first open house, we were pleased with the quality of the conversations and feedback we received from attendees,” said Steve Ashworth, Parks & Recreation Director. “For the second open house, we plan to present the ideas and concepts that we heard to make sure we’re on the right track with the priorities of stakeholders and the community at-large,” he continued. “The discussion and brainstorming will continue, but this time we’ll be attempting to further refine and prioritize potential concepts and plans for the future of the two parcels.”
Formal recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners will not be developed following the second open house. Pending feedback and input, the third open house, to be held on October 10, will present more defined concepts for potential recommendations.
The Snake River Corridor Management/Ownership Transfer Plan from 2008 provides background and detailed information on this process.
The Recreation and Public Purposes Act articulates the process for a land transfer from the BLM to unit of government such as Teton County. In order to complete a transfer, a schematic master plan must be completed, which is essentially a blueprint for the features and uses that will be on the land.
In addition to the open houses, some community surveying is being planned to gain additional input, and the Parks & Recreation Department will provide regular updates to the community about the project’s progress.
Once all three public open houses have been completed, meetings and workshops will take place with the Board of County Commissioners to review recommendations and finalize the schematic master plan.
Updates will be provided to the public throughout the process.
