Jackson Woman Dies in Avalanche
A 28-year-old Jackson woman died Sunday after being caught in an avalanche in the Clause Creek area west of Bondurant in Sublette County. Forest officials say she apparently triggered an eight-inch deep soft slab avalanche on a steep slope which carried her into a timbered area where she struck a tree. Sublette County Spokesman Steve Smith says Elizabeth Benson was with a group of five shortly after 3:00 pm when she was caught in the slide. She was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician who was traveling with the group. Tip Top Search and Rescue out of Pinedale traveled to the area Monday to retrieve Benson’s body.
