Elk Feeding Begins
Biologists say supplemental feeding is anticipated to begin today on the National Elk Refuge following the addition of two to five inches of new snow on top of three to five inches of dense, crusty snow. Refuge Biologist Eric Cole says that has left a limited amount of forage accessible to the elk and bison there. Curiously, the average starting date for supplemental feeding to begin over the past decade has been January 26th. Currently, 5000 elk are estimated to be on the south end of the refuge along with 694 bison.
