Sequestration Hits Refuge Behind The Scenes

National Elk Refuge

Sequestration’s toll on the operations at the National Parks has been in the news for the past week, but little has been said about other national agencies like the US Fish and Wildlife Service.  Spokesperson Lori Iverson says the Refuge had been anticipating a tight budget and planned for it some time ago.  Consequently, Iverson says, there will be little change in refuge operations that will be evident to the public.  None-the-less, she says budgets remain tight and the refuge will operate with only 50% of identified staffing positions filled for the coming year. At the same time, Iverson says travel and other expenses by the remaining employees are being restricted.
