2013 Elk Season To Be Set

WGF Logo

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking public input in the setting of the 2013 big game hunting season.  Game and Fish Spokesman Al Langston says as such, meetings are being hosted in Jackson and Pinedale next week to solicit public comments and concerns. Langston says the ratio of calves to cows needed to sustain the herd is slightly higher than what is currently being seen in the Jackson Herd, but that ratio is up significantly from what it was last year and exceeds the ratio south of Jackson. Langston says as such, hunters can expect to see the season proposal for the Jackson elk herd this year to continue to focus on harvesting the portion of the herd that summers along the Snake River corridor in southern Grand Teton National Park and in hunt area 78. Since numbers of elk are near management objectives, Langston says hunt quotas are expected to be conservative once again this year.  Meanwhile, he says, the moose herd here is continuing a downward trend.  The Jackson meeting is set for 6:30 pm March 20th at the Jackson Game and Fish Office.

  • If you’re going to hunt rabbits, this is your year - October 2, 2014
The rabbit populations in the state are going crazy. I have a degree in zoology, so I feel I’m qualified to estimate the number of cottontails hopping around Wyoming. My best estimate is zillions. OK, so maybe my methods for determining the rabbit numbers aren’t exactly scientific. But there are a lot of ‘em. There […]
  • Colder Today With Rain Showers And Mountain Snow - October 1, 2014
A cold front and weather system will push through the state of Wyoming early today.  Scattered rain showers will be possible statewide across lower elevations, but the best chance will be in northern and southeastern Wyoming.  Rain showers could become heavy at times, especially in southeastern parts of the state in the afternoon and evening.  […]
  • Today’s a big day for hunters in Wyoming - October 1, 2014
If you’re really serious about hunting, you’re probably not listening to this. Depending on where you are in the state, the sun’s either up already or sunrise isn’t far away. If you’re a die-hard hunter, you’re probably already hunkered down in a field waiting for the geese to come in, out in the timber trying […]
  • Not all bad news in judge’s decision to relist wolves - September 30, 2014
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson handed down a ruling last week that removed wolves from Wyoming control and put them back under the protection of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That ruling put an end to hunting wolves anywhere in the state, whether they’re in the trophy game area in the northwestern corner […]
