This is the day that everyone needs to have their income taxes filed if they have not filed for an extension – and in Jackson, that means any tax returns being mailed must be to the post office downtown by 5:00 pm. Postmaster Jennifer Grutzmacher says both the drop boxes outside and inside the post offices will be cleared at 4:30 pm at the Maple Way location and 5:00 pm at the Pearl Street location. She adds that forms and other needed items are available at the post office for last minute filers as well. The Internal Revenue Service suggests that by filing electronically, tax return errors can be vastly reduced as the tax software does the calculations, flags common errors and prompts taxpayers for missing information. Furthermore, electronic filing offers a free option for everyone. The IRS also reminds that even though someone may file for an extension, tax payments are still due on April 15th.
