Near Record Sleigh-Ride Numbers

Sleigh Rides

The National Elk Refuge is reporting the highest numbers on the sleigh rides through the wintering herd since the 2007/2008 winter season.  Refuge Spokesperson Lori Iverson says total ridership this just-concluded season was 24,122 people, compared with 25,679 during the record year.  That places this past season second highest in recent sleigh-ride history.  Meanwhile, visitor center visitation during that same period was 75,583. The sleigh ride gathering spot in recent years was moved to the visitor center, where naturalists provide short interpretive programs to sleigh riders to help make their trips through the wintering herd more meaningful.  Iverson says an additional 821 people participated in 76 wildlife excursions onto the refuge during the season
