State Calls Interior Department Into Question

Gov Mead

Wyoming Governor Matt Mead told those attending a town hall meeting in Jackson Saturday morning that the state is drafting a letter to the Department of Interior voicing concern over the curtailment of services to the traveling public at the national parks in the state. Mead says the letter being drafted cites some of the consequences of the curtailment of services and calling for a better way of handling the cuts.  Mead says while he believes the federal cuts are necessary, but the way the government is going about sequestration seems to create the most conflict rather than doing it the way the state did it last year with efforts to make the impact of the cuts the least painful possible. Last week, the new Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell assumed her responsibilities with the departure of Secretary Ken Salazar.  Mead said he had an excellent working relationship with Salazar who had come to the post from neighboring Colorado.  That doesn’t mean the state didn’t have serious disagreements with Salazar on some issues but Mead says, “We could meet as we did many times…on wolves and other issues and hashed out where we agreed and disagreed.”  He says Wyoming will reach out to the new Secretary and try to form that same relationship.  Mead points out that while the state and the Interior Secretary may not always agree, it is very important that Wyoming has a close working relationship with Interior because, in his words, “it means so much to our state in so many ways.”

  • A hunt with no disasters isn’t as much fun - October 24, 2014
Not long ago, I saw a message on one of the hunting blogs I like to read. The writer wanted hunters to send in accounts of disasters they’d had in the field. I bet he got swamped with emails. Every hunter I know has had at least one calamity in the woods. If you hunt, […]
  • Windy At Times Today, Unseasonably Mild Through Saturday - October 23, 2014
As high pressure strengthens, warmer air from southwestern portions of the nation will move into the region today.  Conditions will also stay mainly dry throughout much of the state, but winds will be strong and gusty.  Parts of I-25 (Colorado state line to Casper) and I-80 (Cheyenne to Rawlins) could see gusting as high as […]
  • My new used truck may be the death of me - October 23, 2014
Not long ago, I brought home a 1994 Ford F-250. It’s not much to look at, but it’s even worse to drive. About the only things it has going for it are that it’s mechanically sound, and it’s technically a vehicle. I’ve named it Clunk, for good reason. When you shift it into either drive […]
  • Quiet, Seasonal Weather Expected Today - October 22, 2014
High pressure will build over the state of Wyoming today, which will keep skies sunny to mostly sunny and conditions mainly dry.  Winds, however, could be strong and gusty today, especially throughout central and southeastern portions of the state.  Parts of I-80 (Cheyenne to Rawlins) and I-25 (Colorado state line to Casper) could see winds […]
