The Jackson Police Department Saturday will partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Smith’s Food and Drug on a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative in hopes of preventing increased pill abuse and theft. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The program is completely anonymous and citizens are asked to turn in expired, unused, or unwanted prescription or over the counter medications for destruction. Liquid medications and hypodermic needles will not be accepted. Many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing it down the toilet or throwing it away – both potential safety and health hazards. Jackson police officers will be present at Smith’s Food and Drug in Jackson from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm the day of the initiative to collect the unwanted medications.
