Scouts Round Up Antlers On Refuge

antler roundup

Approximately 160 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and adult leaders, not including National Elk Refuge personnel in attendance, combed the refuge for shed antlers that will be put up for auction in mid-May.  80% of the money raised by the project help fund activities on the refuge while the remainder is used to help pay annual district membership fees to Boy Scouts of America.  District Chairman Cliff Kirkpatrick calls the day a major success for a number of reasons.  Not the least of those was the sunny warm weather. Virtually every team returned having found antlers to be put up for auction.  Refuge Manager Steve Kallan said while it may not have been a bumper crop, the collection was still respectable.  Now, says Kirkpatrick, the work preparing the antlers collected for the May 18th auction begins.  Those activities include sorting the antlers and bundling them and weighing them. Kirkpatrick anticipates the total amount to be down a little because of the warm spring weather influencing the elk to leave the refuge before dropping their antlers for the season.  However, he says, some came back onto the refuge in the last week or so and he hopes they shed their antlers then. While scouts have collected the antlers on the refuge since 1957, the public auction on the Jackson Town Square began 1968, always on the weekend prior to Memorial Day Weekend.  Jackson District Boy Scouts have headed up the effort since the very beginning, working nearly 2,000 hours with refuge personnel on the project.
