Some Forest Roads Open Today

rutted road

Bridger Teton National Forest is opening many of its roads for the season today, but lingering snow and wet conditions are still limiting access in some areas. Forest Spokesperson Mary Cernicek reminds forest visitors that damage incurred by people driving on muddy roads before they have firmed up can cause costly damage and possible loss of access.  She says when people travel on wet roads, it can compromise the integrity of the road, it can push the road base around leading to deep rutting, and too often the road is spread beyond its boundaries by people trying to drive around the puddles. Among those roads still closed to vehicle travel she says are some that are very popular among local forest users. Among them are the upper stretches of the Grays River Road near Afton, parts of Fall Creek Road, and the Curtis Canyon road just past the overlook area. Other closures include the Shadow Mountain road, Ditch Creek Road, Mosquito Creek Road and the north fork of Fall Creek Road. Some of these roads may not become accessible until early June. Cernicek also asks visitors to watch for wildlife on the forest roads and the major highways as well – lowering speed for safety along the Snake River Canyon, Hoback Canyon, Togwotee Pass, Union Pass and Trapper’s Point.  The latest trail, road and campground conditions can be found online or by calling 739-5500.

  • If you’re going to hunt rabbits, this is your year - October 2, 2014
The rabbit populations in the state are going crazy. I have a degree in zoology, so I feel I’m qualified to estimate the number of cottontails hopping around Wyoming. My best estimate is zillions. OK, so maybe my methods for determining the rabbit numbers aren’t exactly scientific. But there are a lot of ‘em. There […]
  • Colder Today With Rain Showers And Mountain Snow - October 1, 2014
A cold front and weather system will push through the state of Wyoming early today.  Scattered rain showers will be possible statewide across lower elevations, but the best chance will be in northern and southeastern Wyoming.  Rain showers could become heavy at times, especially in southeastern parts of the state in the afternoon and evening.  […]
  • Today’s a big day for hunters in Wyoming - October 1, 2014
If you’re really serious about hunting, you’re probably not listening to this. Depending on where you are in the state, the sun’s either up already or sunrise isn’t far away. If you’re a die-hard hunter, you’re probably already hunkered down in a field waiting for the geese to come in, out in the timber trying […]
  • Not all bad news in judge’s decision to relist wolves - September 30, 2014
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson handed down a ruling last week that removed wolves from Wyoming control and put them back under the protection of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That ruling put an end to hunting wolves anywhere in the state, whether they’re in the trophy game area in the northwestern corner […]
