Elk Linger At Refuge

Elk Collar

A count of elk still on the National Elk Refuge last week revealed that there still were 4030 of the ungulates lingering near the south end of the refuge, and some 296 bison also remained. Refuge Biologist Eric Cole adds that 71% of the radio collared elk that had been on the refuge for the winter were still there. However, over the warm weekend, Cole says those numbers decreased by about half.  Cole says while it is not unusual for some elk and bison to linger on the refuge into May, refuge personnel will haze them off early in the month. At this time of elk movement, Cole again reminds motorists on US Highway 26/89/191 north of the refuge to be particularly watchful for the animals – especially during the twilight and nighttime hours.

You can set up your decoys to minimize the risk of shooting at birds when they’re too far […]
  • Don’t lose your vision in the woods - October 21, 2014
I don’t have good eyes. Had I been born a hundred years ago, there would have been no help for me. Glasses can’t help me, so I’d have blind. I have to wear a special kind of contact lens, which wasn’t available in the days of Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone. But through the miracle […]
  • Hunters must be conservationists first - October 20, 2014
As hunters, it’s our responsibility to take care of the critters we hunt, as well as those we don’t. We have to obey the game laws. Police ourselves to be sure others respect the wildlife. And even offer suggestions to the Game and Fish Commission when we think there are better ways to ensure that […]
