Due to the persistent instabilities in the snowpack at low elevations, representatives
from Teton County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and the Bridger-Teton Avalanche
Center will be performing avalanche control at the Jackson Campus of Teton Science Schools (TSS) on
February 12, 2019. Local agencies recommended this control effort to decrease avalanche hazard above
campus roads located off of Highway 22, and it will take place in the early afternoon hours. Avalanche
hazard for buildings on the Jackson Campus is mitigated by avalanche fences installed when the campus
was built.
Teton County residents can expect Coyote Canyon Road to be closed during the mitigation work.
Journeys School students will be released early from school at 12:15 p.m. prior to the operation, and only
the TSS staff who will support ongoing programming or the mitigation operation will remain on campus.
Teton Science Schools’ Executive Director Chris Agnew stated, “This is an example of how the
community comes together during a hardy Teton winter. We are extremely grateful to the Bridger-Teton
Avalanche Center, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Teton County Sheriff’s Office for their support in
helping us mitigate the avalanche hazard on our campus. Our continual goal is to prioritize the safety of
students and staff on all campuses and programs.”
