A fire Sunday night in the Movieworks Shopping Plaza could have been much worse under other circumstances, according to Battalion Chief Mike Moyer of Jackson Hole Fire/EMS. Moyer says the fire was reported shortly before 11:00 pm with both smoke and fire showing from the small shelter used by Slow Foods Farm Stand. Initial attack was made by a Jackson police officer with a fire extinguisher, but when fire trucks arrived, they had difficulty locating the fire hydrant. Only feet away from the fire on an island in the parking lot, the hydrant was completely buried and obscured by snow. Firefighters used the water reserve on board the truck to douse the fire before the hydrant was located. Damage to the Slow Foods building was moderate. Moyer pointed out that under other circumstances, the situation could have been far more serious. Moyer again urges residents to take the time to unbury the fire hydrants closest to their homes or businesses so that they are readily available in an emergency. Moyer says the fire was caused by an electrical short.
