Bear Spray For Fathers’ Day

Bear-Spray

Sunday is Fathers’ Day, and with many dads in this area very much into outdoor activities, representatives of the National Park and Forest suggest a supply of bear deterrent might make a perfect gift. Bridger Teton National Forest Spokesperson Mary Cernicek points out that where ever you turn in this part of Wyoming, carrying a can of the deterrent is recommended. Cernicek says there are black bears and grizzly bears that frequent, not just within the forest boundaries, but also within the towns and developed areas.  Visitors to the forest and national park are encouraged to be equipped with and familiar with how to use bear spray. Even those bicycling on the path through the National Park are urged to carry a can of the spray with them due to the prevalence of bears there.  Park Spokesperson Jackie Skaggs says, best of all for the Fathers’ Day shopper or area recreationists, the product is found very easily here. She says because there are so many grizzly bears in Grand Teton National Park and on the Bridger Teton National Forest, several different outlets have bear spray available.  Among them are all of the Grand Teton National Park Association bookstores around the park, the interagency visitor center on the north end of Jackson, sporting goods stores around town, and a variety of other stores in town as well. The product is also available in each of the ranger district offices of Bridger-Teton National Forest.  Cernicek stresses that people need to be sure it is specifically labeled as bear spray rather than personal defense pepper spray; and Skaggs cautions against test firing the spray as there is a limited amount of deterrent contained in the can.
