Searchers have discovered the body of a 61 year-old member of a politically prominent western family. James Udall’s body was located in the Wind River Mountains near Pinedale Wednesday afternoon. According to the Sublette County Sheriff’s office, Udall’s body was spotted from the air, lying in open, rolling terrain on his side. The helicopter landed immediately and searchers found no signs of life. A detective with the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office was subsequently flown to the scene and picked up Udall’s body. The body is to be transported to Loveland Colorado where an autopsy is to be performed. Sheriff’s officials did not speculate on a cause of death, but said foul play is not suspected. He was considered an accomplished outdoorsman. Udall was a brother of Colorado Sen. Mark Udall, cousin of New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall, and son of the late Arizona Rep. Morris “Mo” Udall. His uncle, Stewart Udall, was Interior secretary in the 1960s.
