River Ambassador Takes Up His Post

July 8, 2013 Jackson Hole No Comments
Pistono

The Snake River Fund has made it possible for River Ambassador Jay Pistono to return this year to the river’s Wilson-South Park stretch to greet visitors, educate boaters and do what he can to help ease congestion during times of heavy use at the Wilson and South Park boat ramps. Funding for the position comes from grants provided by the Bureau of Land Management and Wyoming Game and Fish Department.  Pistono answers questions about fishing and river flows, helps boaters unload heavy rafts, helps dories launch and land, inspects boat hulls for invasive species, takes water temperature measurements, directs buses in turning around, helps find lost items and logs statistics about user volumes.  Snake River Fund officials announced that this year, Pistono will have some help on the busier days from Volunteer Eliot Neal of the Snake River Fund.

If you’ve done any goose hunting, you’ve probably heard the term “skybusting.” You may know it means shooting at birds that are out of your shotgun’s effective range, but do you know if you’re guilty of it? You can set up your decoys to minimize the risk of shooting at birds when they’re too far […]
  • Don’t lose your vision in the woods - October 21, 2014
I don’t have good eyes. Had I been born a hundred years ago, there would have been no help for me. Glasses can’t help me, so I’d have blind. I have to wear a special kind of contact lens, which wasn’t available in the days of Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone. But through the miracle […]
  • Hunters must be conservationists first - October 20, 2014
As hunters, it’s our responsibility to take care of the critters we hunt, as well as those we don’t. We have to obey the game laws. Police ourselves to be sure others respect the wildlife. And even offer suggestions to the Game and Fish Commission when we think there are better ways to ensure that […]
