A visitor to Yellowstone National Park has again been cited for walking off the boardwalk and onto the sensitive geyserite surroundings of Grand Prismatic Springs Thursday.
The man was seen by another visitor who videotaped the incident and notified rangers. The visitor also provided a photo of the license plate of the man’s vehicle which led rangers to be able to identify him. Park officials have not released the name of the violator.
Leaving the provided walkways in the thermal areas can not only damage the formations, but also risk the violator breaking through to the scalding water beneath.
Two years ago, three Canadian men became the center of a Yellowstone National Park law enforcement investigation after they posted photos and video of themselves walking on the Grand Prismatic Spring and the nearby crater of the Excelsior Geyser.
They ultimately were banned from federal lands for five years after serving some jail time for that and other infractions.
An Oregon man died in June of that same year when he left a designated boardwalk and fell into a scalding hot spring at Yellowstone.
