Unattended Campfires Still A Problem

Fire danger in the northwestern corner of the state remains moderate while fire conditions not far to the south or to the west are much more tenuous.  Daily showers and higher overnight humidity have contributed to the continued moderation of fire conditions – but National Forest and National Park officials quickly point out that wildfires can still start and spread as evidenced last week when a fire broke out on the National Elk Refuge just south of the Gros Ventre Campground near Kelly – believed to have been caused by the launch of illegal fireworks from the campground.  Forest officials also tell of a continued problem of campers in the Shadow Mountain and Curtis Canyon areas (in particular) failing to extinguish campfires before leaving their campsites.  Officials urge those recreating outdoors not to be lulled into complacency just because the fire danger is lower here than it is elsewhere.
