Yellowstone National Park rangers point out that huckleberries and whortleberries are a tasty, succulent treat often found in late August and early September along trails. However, they caution those who would enjoy them to stay safe and legal by knowing what you are eating and only eating berries inside the park. Gathering berries to take outside the park is not allowed. At the same time, don’t forget to keep an eye out for bears as they are on the hunt for berries too. Look for overturned logs or rocks, fresh bear scat, and make lots of noise – and of course, always carry bear spray where you can access it easily if you have to.
