Native Americans Bless Yellowstone Bison

A group of Native Americans were able to access the park last week to conduct their traditional prayer of the buffalo despite the shutdown. According to National Park Service management policies, “The American Indian Religious Freedom Act reaffirms the First Amendment rights of Native Americans to access National Park System lands for the exercise of their traditional religious practices.”  Rangers ultimately escorted a group of Native Americans to Fountain Flats where they held their prayer in the presence of trumpeter swans, curious ravens, Yellowstone’s geysers, and bison bulls grazing along the Firehole River. The goal was to seek restoration of the health of the central Yellowstone herd, thinned by 3,100 over recent years by hunting and park roundups.
