Recycle Center Makes Pumpkin Disposal Fun

Now that you are done with your jack-o-lantern, Teton County Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling and Terra Firma Organics urge you not to simply throw it away and contribute to loading up the landfill with pumpkins.  Residents planning on tossing their pumpkins are invited to take it to the Teton County Rodeo Grounds and launch it instead.  Mac Dukart of the county recycling center says a giant pumpkin slingshot will be on hand to provide a fun way to add pumpkins to the recycling pile. Duckart says the slingshot was built out of the old High School bleachers that had been discarded as scrap, the rubber bands from the trampoline at Teton Village, and an old tow strap from one of the recycle center trucks.  Pumpkins being brought to the event must be free of candles or other objects.  Besides launching the pumpkins, Dukart says the recycle center has other activities in store for the kids from the Jackson Hole Children’s Museum.  This is the third year for the event, and Dukart says last year about 4200 pounds of pumpkins were collected and composted by Terra Firma Organics rather than putting them into the landfill. The event takes place at the rodeo grounds between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm Saturday.  Dukart points out that composting the pumpkins locally avoids having to haul this material 100 miles one-way to the landfill near Idaho Falls.
