It is that time of year again when fliers will be placed on the doorknobs of homes throughout the town, seeking donations of food for the Jackson Food Cupboard. Scouting for Food is an annual event orchestrated by the local Scouts BSA. Boys and girls in the scout program distribute the flyers to homes across the area to remind people to fill bags or boxes with non-perishable food. Then beginning at 9:00 am on October 26th, the scouts will return to collect the food. Items that are welcomed include canned fruits and vegetables, canned stews and meats, dry foods (like pasta, rice and flour), toiletries, and even pet foods. This food in turn is distributed to needy families throughout the community from the Jackson Cupboard in the basement of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Scouting for Food is the Cupboard’s biggest food drive each year, and despite the amount that is collected in the drive, it is typically depleted by the end of February; and the Cupboard then needs to look to other food collection efforts. Residents who do not receive a flyer on their doors may still make donations of food by dropping it into bins placed in area grocery stores by the scouts.
