Elk Migrate To Refuge In Earnest

Feeding season ends for elk.

The winter residents have arrived.  National Elk Refuge Biologist Eric Cole says during the early morning hours Tuesday, approximately 2000 elk migrated onto the refuge with 344 on the south end despite pressure from hunters there.  Meanwhile, with Forest Service land east of the refuge now closed to hunting, many elk are congregating there during the day,  feeding on the refuge during the night, and then returning to the safety of the forest prior to first light. So far, Cole says 66 elk have been harvested on the refuge.
