Wyoming’s US Senator Mike Enzi is fighting for federal funds due to the state’s counties in lieu of taxes. The annual payment, called PILT, is critical funding to nearly 1,900 counties in 49 states and three U.S. territories to help offset losses to local governments from the presence of non-taxable federal lands. As of yesterday, Enzi says the PILT program was not included in the 2014 spending bill. Enzi says without the funding, counties across the nation would experience incredible economic hardship. With federal land accounting for about 97% of the land in Teton County, this county’s PILT payment is significant.
