The Jackson Town Council and Teton County Commission yesterday examined a proposal to enlarge the town and county recreation center in order to accommodate more features. Among the proposed features are an additional pool for fitness and lessons, a health and wellness center for fitness equipment, an additional gymnasium and track, a bowling alley and expanded meeting and education facilities. Town and county officials point out that over the past nineteen years, staff has continued to receive a community call for more recreational amenities. In 2010 the department went to the voters through the Specific Purpose Excise Tax requesting funding to analyze and design additional program space for the facility, and with those funds, assembled a team of recreational, planning and architectural professionals to identify, analyze and recommend proposals to accurately meet the community’s needs, while still ensuring the Center’s viability. Comments from the governing bodies yesterday are now to be incorporated into a revised plan which will be presented along with costs to the Joint Powers Board May 5th.
