Bill Seeks To Exempt Tips From Sales Tax

Petroff

If sales tax is not taken out of tips provided to food service workers, why should it be charged on tips for hospitality and lodging workers?  That’s the point of a bill introduced by Teton County Representative Ruth Ann Petroff.  Petroff explained to members of the that  a bill was passed exempting gratuities from sales tax, regardless of whether the gratuity was offered by the customer or invoiced by the seller.  However, she adds, “In the interim, I got a call from the association representing guest ranches with this very problem; and I said ‘well we fixed it – we already passed a bill last year’ but it turns out that the bill that we passed only applied to food service establishments.” Needing a 2/3 majority to be considered during a budget session, the bill received unanimous acceptance.
