Washington Delegation Lobbies For Land Exchange

Enzi

Even as the Wyoming State Legislature continues to work out legislation to provide alternative compensation for land in Grand Teton National Park that the Interior Department has agreed to acquire, US Senator Mike Enzi says the delegation in Washington continues its efforts to help persuade the federal government to seize the opportunity.  While visiting Jackson Friday, Enzi said although this is a transaction between Wyoming and the federal government, the Washington delegation has been applying the pressure they can at the federal level to get it done and emphasize why it would be a good deal for the department of Interior – why they don’t want the land to go into private hands.  Says Enzi:  “They do understand that:  the federal government just has a very technical and complicated way of deriving what their values are.”  He adds that if they had cash to complete the agreement, this would be an easy deal.  Enzi says the delegation and the state have suggested other ways to consummate the deal, with the most logical one being for the federal government to exchange mineral-laden land of equal value for those inholdings.
