Teton County Search and Rescue experienced the fewest number of call-outs since the first of the year compared with any other similar time frame in the 27-year history of the organization. During the first six months of 2020, there were 31 calls from emergency dispatch that got routed to TCSAR as opposed to 58 from the same period last year. Of the 31, 18 resulted in a team response: eight were helicopter operations, including four short-hauls that helped extract injured people from serious situations. Unfortunately, there was one fatality among them – still, the fewest since the winter of 2010. In addressing the relative calm rescue period, team volunteer Stephanie Thomas, who is also the executive director of the TCSAR Foundation, says the organization is hopeful that prevention education through Backcountry Zero has helped our community be more prepared and practiced for adventuring in the Tetons. At the same time, while there were fewer calls during the winter and spring period, there has been a steady increase since June 1st, with the team responding to a half dozen accidents already this summer.
